Fantagraphics’ East Asian comics imprint, Takumigraphics, has revealed a striking new preview for Akane Torikai’s dystopian manga Wandering Cat’s Cage. Acclaimed translator Jocelyne Allen is handling the English adaptation, which is now scheduled to hit shelves as a 334-page hardcover volume on October 27, 2026, following a slight shift from its original May window.
Originally serialized in Kadokawa’s Da Vinci magazine between June 2017 and September 2018, Wandering Cat’s Cage explores a bleak, thought-provoking future where declining birth rates and strict medical oversight dictate the lives of citizens. The series was originally collected into two tankōbon volumes in Japan before capturing the attention of international publishers.
A Society Divided
Fantagraphics outlines a stark setting where women live highly controlled lives within the gleaming confines of The City, while outcasts eke out a dangerous yet free existence in a rundown shantytown across the river. The narrative centers on Sanada, a young acupuncturist, and Reiho, a rare male living outside institutional breeding programs whose abduction sets off a gripping tale of rebellion, community, and emotional survival.
The release is part of a collaborative publishing initiative between Fantagraphics and Mangasplaining Extra. As Takumigraphics continues to expand its catalog following titles like Yudori's Lovers of the Empire, Wandering Cat’s Cage stands out as a compelling addition to contemporary speculative manga available in English.
