Publisher Takarajimasha has announced the upcoming release of Sound! Euphonium: Kitauji High School Concert Band Diary 2, marking the franchise's second official guidebook in a decade. Arriving in tandem with the theatrical release of the final cinematic chapter, the commemorative volume bundles post-graduation fiction, comic adaptations, and extensive retrospective commentary celebrating author Ayano Takeda's landmark youth drama.
New Fiction and Creative Retrospectives
Central to the volume are four brand-new short stories penned by Takeda that chronicle the Kitauji High School concert band following the retirement of Kumiko and her fellow third-year seniors. The book also collects 29 micro-stories originally shared on social media alongside bonus prose distributed during previous theatrical screenings.
Longtime series illustrator Nikki Asada provides a new comic adaptation of the popular vignette Maru no Nakami wa Nandarona, accompanied by an exclusive cover illustration gallery and a double-sided poster comparing novel milestones with Kyoto Animation's screen adaptations.
Reflecting on a Decelong Journey
In an extended dialogue featured inside the book, Takeda explores the complex interpersonal frictions that defined the final arc, specifically addressing the emotional breaking points between Kumiko and Reina:
The line about being unfit as club president existed in the original novels, and it was something I wrestled with intensely while writing. I wanted dialogue that felt entirely natural for Reina to say, yet would wound Kumiko most deeply.
