Readers awaiting a return to Masanori Morita’s iconic delinquent universe will have to wait a few months longer. Shueisha’s 18th issue of Grand Jump revealed that the launch of Rokudenashi Blues Gaiden: Onikazura has been pushed from its original summer release window to winter. Alongside the schedule shift, original illustrator Boichi has stepped off the project, with Yuki Yoshimoto—best known for his art on Ghost in the Shell: The Human Algorithm—taking over illustration duties.

Set during the first half of the 1990s, Rokudenashi Blues Gaiden: Onikazura is neither a sequel nor a traditional reboot. Original author Masanori Morita previously clarified on social media that the narrative spotlights an unwritten clash between Onizuka and Kasai, two key figures among the story's famed "Four Heavenly Kings." Rather than altering the established canon, the spin-off focuses on a high-stakes duel that unfolded behind the scenes during the main serial's run.
The original Rokudenashi Blues remains a cornerstone of Weekly Shonen Jump's golden era. Serialized from 1988 to 1997 across 42 compiled volumes, Morita's high school boxing epic followed hot-headed Taison Maeda navigating brutal rivalries at Teiken High School. Over the years, the franchise expanded into two theatrical anime films in 1992 and 1993, multiple live-action feature adaptations, and a 2011 television drama. While Boichi's departure shifts expectations, Yoshimoto's experience with intricate line work should offer a sharp visual framing for this classic yankee showdown.
