Toshiaki Iwashiro’s cult-classic supernatural battle manga Psyren (PSYREN -サイレン-) is finally making its long-awaited transition to television animation. Ahead of its broadcast debut, production house Satelight has released the official synopsis and a series of advance preview cuts for the premiere episode, setting the stage for one of the decade's most anticipated shonen revivals.
Originally serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 2008 to 2010, Psyren amassed a fiercely loyal following and famously ranked three times in AnimeJapan’s highly competitive "Poll for Manga We Want to See Animated." More than fifteen years after its conclusion, the suspense-driven survival thriller is ready to captivate a new generation of viewers under the direction of Katsumi Ono.
Episode 1 Urban Legend Overview
The narrative kicks off with Ageha Ageha, a first-year high school student running an odd-jobs service to vent his underlying emptiness through brawls. His life takes a sharp, perilous turn when he finds a mysterious red public telephone card left behind—the exact same card possessed by his missing childhood friend, Sakurako Amamiya. Driven by desperation, Ageha investigates a sinister urban legend surrounding the secretive "Psyren Society" and the mysterious messenger Nemesis Q.
When unknown assassins target him for the card, Ageha answers a ringing public phone in an act of absolute desperation, instantly thrusting his physical body into an unfamiliar, hostile wasteland. The premiere episode, titled "Urban Legend," will set the terrifying rules of the death game into motion.
