The Fantasia Bunko Grand Fan Appreciation Festival 2026 Online event brought major news for science fiction enthusiasts, confirming that the ongoing Patlabor EZY anime project is receiving an official novelization. Set to launch next year under the Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint, the book adaptation bridges classic mecha storytelling with fresh literary prose.
Creative heavyweights are anchoring the publication. Toshihiko Tsukiji, recognized for his work on Maburaho and Kämpfer, is penning the narrative, while veteran character designer Akemi Takada—whose association with the Patlabor franchise spans decades—is providing the cover illustrations. This collaboration unites light novel talent with foundational industry pedigree.
A New Era for SV-2
The underlying Patlabor EZY anime series consists of eight episodes structured across a theatrical release format of three films. "File 1" and "File 2" premiered in May and August respectively, utilizing an omnibus approach for the first six episodes, while "File 3" is scheduled to open on March 5 to conclude the story arc with a final two-part narrative.
Set in the 2030s, the narrative explores a Japan grappling with severe labor shortages and automated AI infrastructure. Although piloted Labors have transitioned into everyday utility and face competition from autonomous units, the Special Vehicles Division 2 maintains its jurisdiction, utilizing tuned iterations of their iconic SV-98 Ingram units to combat specialized crimes.
