Tetsu Kariya and Akira Hanazaki's monumental culinary masterpiece Oishinbo is officially making its long-awaited return to the screen. Announced during the Shin-Ei Animation 50th Anniversary special stage at the ABEMA Anime Festival 2026, the new television anime adaptation has been officially titled Shin Oishinbo, bringing a fresh perspective back to the iconic gastronomic world.
Kariya originally launched the manga in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine back in 1983, with intricate artwork provided by Hanazaki. The sprawling series spans 111 collected volumes published up to December 2014, though the publication has remained on indefinite hiatus since May 2014. Internationally, VIZ Media previously brought portions of the epic to English readers through its VIZ Signature imprint, releasing seven themed compilation volumes between 2009 and 2010.
Animation Heritage
Studio Shin-Ei Animation previously adapted the classic manga into an extensive 136-episode television series that aired from October 1988 to March 1992. With the studio returning to celebrate its half-century milestone by reviving this culinary cornerstone, expectations are high for how modern animation techniques will capture the meticulous detail of Japanese gastronomy and complex interpersonal drama.
