The culinary landscape of television animation is set for a monumental return. The official website for the newly announced television anime adaptation of Tetsu Kariya's legendary Oishinbo manga, officially titled Shin Oshinbo, has unveiled its principal voice cast, creative staff, and a striking teaser visual. Fans of authentic gastronomy and deep-seated familial drama can mark their calendars for a 2027 premiere window.
The Creative Force Behind the Kitchen
Steering this ambitious adaptation is director Kenichi Nishida, known for his work on Naruto: Shippuuden. The intricate narrative framework is built by series composition writer Takahiro Nagano (Tensei shitara Ken deshita), while character designs are crafted by Nozomi Kawashige (Deatte 5-byou de Battle). Animation production is a collaborative effort between Synergism and Vega Entertainment, with Shin-Ei Animation overseeing production duties.
Bringing the iconic culinary journalists and critics to life is a seasoned voice acting ensemble. Youhei Azakami will star as the discerning protagonist Shirou Yamaoka, Hitomi Sasaki steps into the role of Yuuko Kurita, and veteran voice actor Akio Ootsuka takes on the formidable presence of Yuuzan Kaibara.
A Legacy Etched in Gastronomic History
Tetsu Kariya originally launched the foundational Oishinbo manga in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits magazine back in 1983, featuring illustrations by Akira Hanazaki. The sprawling culinary epic amassed 111 collected volumes before entering an indefinite hiatus in May 2014. Internationally, VIZ Media previously brought portions of the sprawling epic to English-speaking readers under their VIZ Signature imprint. This new adaptation follows Shin-Ei Animation's historic 136-episode television run that aired from 1988 to 1992, promising a fresh perspective on a timeless cornerstone of Japanese manga culture.
