Culinary animation is about to witness a monumental homecoming. The iconic gastronomic franchise Oishinbo is officially returning to television screens with Shin Oishinbo, a brand-new adaptation scheduled to premiere in Japan in 2027. Following its initial announcement during Shin-Ei Animation's 50th-anniversary celebration at the ABEMA Anime Festival, producers have finally pulled back the curtain with a striking teaser visual and promotional footage spotlighting the central trio.
The Creative Ensemble and Staff Lineup
Helming the production is director Kenichi Nishida, recognized for his work on Good Bye, Dragon Life. The series composition is placed in the capable hands of Takahiro Nagano, whose credits include Reincarnated as a Sword, while character designs are crafted by Nozomi Kawashige. Animation duties are split between SynergySP and Vega Entertainment, with overall production credit attributed to Shin-Ei Animation.
The stellar voice cast features Yohei Azakami stepping into the role of the cynical culinary connoisseur Shiro Yamaoka, alongside Hitomi Sasaki as Yuko Kurita. In a touching piece of generational casting, Akio Otsuka will voice Yuzan Kaibara—taking over the iconic role previously portrayed by his late father, Chikao Otsuka, in the classic 1988 television adaptation.
A Legacy of Culinary Masterpieces
Originally written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki, the original Oishinbo manga began its historic serialization in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits in October 1983. The series has famously remained on indefinite hiatus since May 2014, accumulating 111 tankobon volumes. Its timeless narrative follows cynical journalist Shiro Yamaoka tasked with crafting the ultimate menu for Tozai News' 100th anniversary.
As part of the celebrations for its 100th anniversary, the publishers of the Tozai News have commissioned the creation of the Ultimate Menu, a model meal embodying the pinnacle of Japanese cuisine.
Simon & Schuster
North American fans have previously experienced portions of the franchise through VIZ Media's Oishinbo A la Carte thematic compilation volumes. As anticipation builds toward 2027, enthusiasts of traditional gastronomy and dramatic culinary battles can look forward to seeing how modern animation breathes new life into the cornerstone of food anime.
