The long-awaited adaptation is officially scheduled to premiere in 2027, bringing the seminal gourmet franchise back to television screens over three decades after the conclusion of its classic predecessor.
Star-Studded Cast & Production Pedigree
The newly announced series features an accomplished principal voice cast stepping into iconic culinary roles. Yōhei Azakami will star as the discerning journalist Shirō Yamaoka, joined by Hitomi Sasaki as Yūko Kurita, and veteran voice actor Akio Ōtsuka as the formidable gourmet antagonist Yūzan Kaibara.
Behind the scenes, Ken'ichi Nishida (Good Bye, Dragon Life, Papuwa) is directing the series at animation studios Synergy SP and Vega Entertainment. The series scripts are penned by Takahiro Nagano (Reincarnated as a Sword), while character designs are crafted by Nozomi Kawashige. Production duties are being handled by Shinei Animation, the studio responsible for the historic 1988–1992 television adaptation.
Culinary Legacy & Return
Originally launched in 1983 within Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits, Tetsu Kariya and Akira Hanasaki's Oishinbo stands as a monumental pillar of the gourmet manga genre. The narrative chronicles the intense rivalry between newspaper reporter Shirō Yamaoka and his demanding father, master gourmand Yūzan Kaibara, as they compete through the opposing culinary philosophies of the 'Ultimate Menu' and the 'Supreme Menu.'
While Shogakukan published the 111th compiled volume in December 2014, the manga has remained on hiatus following controversies surrounding the Fukushima nuclear disaster depictions in 2014. Nevertheless, its profound cultural impact endures, having previously inspired a 136-episode anime series by Shinei Animation, theatrical features, and live-action adaptations. North American fans have previously experienced portions of the work via Viz Media's digital and print publications.
