Japanese broadcaster TV Asahi has officially confirmed that Yoshinori Kobayashi's legendary gag manga is returning to television screens with Obocchama-kun Reborn, slated for release in 2027. Alongside the announcement, the production committee shared a first look at the refreshed aesthetic via an official teaser trailer and a colorful promotional visual.
Veteran voice actress Chie Kōjiro will reprise her career-defining performance as the absurdly affluent title character, returning to the role she first brought to life in the original 1989 adaptation.
Cross-Border Production
The upcoming series represents a collaborative production between Japan and India. Indian studio Green Gold Animation will handle the primary animation pipeline, working alongside Shinei Animation and Sony Pictures Networks India following their prior partnership on the 2025 regional release. The 2027 broadcast promises a slate of classic comic material that was never adapted in the vintage run, joined by brand-new episodic scenarios written under Kobayashi's direct supervision.
The extremely crude Obocchama is the heir of the wealthy Obo family and a new student at the elite Denenchofu Academy. The show is an upper-class comedy anime revolving around Cchama's eccentric elementary school classmates: Kakino Shuhei, the first friend Cchama makes without the help of money; Ojo Samayo, Cchama's fiancee whose family runs the Ojo Company; Fukurokoji Kanemitsu whose family are nearly as rich as the Obos; and the proud Binbo Taijo whose family used to be well-off.
Serialized in Shogakukan's CoroCoro Comic between 1986 and 1994, Kobayashi's franchise grew into a prominent fixture of late Showa- and early Heisei-era comedy, collecting 24 tankobon volumes. Its original 164-episode anime series enjoyed an extensive broadcast run from 1989 to 1992 before gaining an enormous international following across South Asia, where dubbed syndication in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu cemented its status across generations.
