Yoshinori Kobayashi's legendary gag manga Obocchama-kun is making a triumphant return to television screens. Titled Obocchama-kun REBORN, the brand-new anime adaptation is officially scheduled to premiere across TV Asahi networks in 2027. Arriving just in time to celebrate the franchise's 40th anniversary, the project promises to bring back the chaotic humor of the Showa and Heisei eras for a modern audience.
Originally launched in Monthly CoroCoro Comic in 1986, the series follows Chamama Gobou—heir to the ultra-wealthy Gobou Financial Group—whose unimaginable fortune and absurd antics continually subvert ordinary society. The original 1989 anime adaptation became a massive cultural phenomenon across Japan, introducing the unique slang 'Chamago' into schoolyards nationwide and earning the 34th Shogakukan Manga Award. The new REBORN project was jump-started following an unexpected explosion in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic in India, leading to an international collaboration spearheaded by TV Asahi, Green Gold Animation, and Shin-Ei Animation.
