The surreal, unconventional slice-of-life manga NullMeta (Nurumeta), created by Kokamumo and serialized in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara MAX, is officially receiving a television anime adaptation scheduled to premiere in 2027. Billed by its production team as the "singularity of slice-of-life anime," the project marks the TV anime directorial debut of acclaimed animator Kai Igarashi, best known for his dynamic direction on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.
Animation production will be handled by studio Soine, which previously worked on titles such as mono and Kamiina Botan, Yoeru Sugata wa Yuri no Hana. Joining Igarashi on the core creative team are series composition writer Tatsuya Takahashi (The Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls) and character designer Shin Ogasawara (Pokémon: Twilight Wings).
Creative Team & Story Details
NullMeta follows the unpredictable and absurd daily lives of four high school girls: the artificial human Kurumi, her protective guardian Chiaki, the cool and aloof Sakina, and Shiyuki, who struggles to maintain a sense of sanity amidst the chaotic group. Breaking away from typical subgenre conventions, the series embraces an "alternative slice-of-life" tone filled with deadpan comedy and bizarre scenarios.
In response to the adaptation news, original author Kokamumo and director Kai Igarashi shared official statements regarding the project:
A massive thank you to all the readers. I am looking forward to the day when the clumsy, comical, adorable, and wholesome daily life of Kurumi and the others can be delivered to everyone on screen.
Kokamumo, Original Creator
I felt as if something was about to begin—arriving from over the hill alongside that intuition. That turned out to be NullMeta. I will do my best to deliver an enjoyable anime to everyone. Please look forward to it.
