German publishing house Dokico has officially confirmed that artist Ayster will spearhead a brand-new manga adaptation of author Inori's acclaimed dark fantasy novel, Homunculus Tears: Alchemy for the Brokenhearted (Homunculus no Namida ~Kietai Kimi e no Renkinjutsu~). The project is slated for an ambitious simultaneous digital and print rollout in English, German, and Japanese, hitting international shelves in January 2027.
This revival follows the restructuring of a previous iteration of the project, which originally stalled when earlier production plans fell through. Author Inori expressed deep personal connection to the story, noting that the narrative was originally conceived as a reassuring sanctuary for anyone struggling to find their place in the world. The story centers on Maha, a formidable military alchemist fighting on the frontlines of a devastating, protracted war between humanity and demons. When her mother introduces a synthetic 'Homunculus' engineered to shoulder the burden of combat, Maha faces a profound existential crisis, stripped of the only battlefield purpose she has ever known.
Creator Inori is widely recognized globally for penning the trailblazing yuri fantasy series I'm in Love with the Villainess (Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijō), which initially launched on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō web novel platform before inspiring a sprawling franchise encompassing Seven Seas Entertainment localizations, a dedicated manga adaptation by artist AONOSHIMO in Ichijinsha's Comic Yuri Hime, and a television anime series streamed internationally by Crunchyroll.
With Dokico backing the international rollout and Ayster at the drawing board, fans of high-concept emotional fantasy can look forward to seeing Maha and Ruri's haunting journey brought to graphic life early next year.
