Director Shingo Natsume's highly anticipated original feature-length anime ghost/Yoru no Hate has officially locked in a nationwide theatrical release date of February 11, 2027. Ahead of its premiere, the production team has dropped a wave of major updates, including key voice cast additions, character artwork, and exclusive music collaborations.
Renowned for his distinct auteur vision across critically acclaimed projects such as One-Punch Man, ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., and the experimental tour de force Sonny Boy, Natsume takes the helm for an entirely original narrative. The film explores the elusive concept of 'true feelings'—the raw, untranslatable 'ghosts' that linger inside the human heart. Animation production is being handled by Madhouse, a studio with which Natsume shares a rich, decades-long collaborative pedigree.
Star-Studded Cast Additions
The latest casting announcements introduce three industry heavyweights to round out the ensemble. Kenjiro Tsuda joins the roster as Moby Dick, the enigmatic creator of the virtual reality network 'Altverse' who takes a keen interest in the protagonist Nike. Meanwhile, Hiroki Yasumoto steps into the role of Karate, an old friend of Masu who manages crane folding at the astronomical observatory where Nike is stationed. Hiroshi Kamiya rounds out the new reveals as Itou, another close confidant of Masu who provides mental coaching to individuals struggling with their existential direction.
The central narrative unfolds in a near-future society where labor has been entirely automated. In this sterile landscape, individuals reaching the age of 18 undergo a strict evaluation to determine their utility to society. Nike, an exceptionally gifted youth screened at just 15, rebels against systemic inequalities while searching for authentic human connection alongside Masu, a character burdened by profound loss.
Musical Collaborations and Global Screenings
Music anchors the atmospheric weight of the film, featuring a sweeping sonic landscape composed by Sora Kishima alongside six original tracks—including theme songs and insertions—crafted by the alternative rock band Hitsujibungaku. A limited run of 2,000 special collaboration Mubichike cards featuring exclusive artist visuals will go on sale during the final stop of the band's 2026 tour at Tokyo's Yoyogi National Gymnasium.
Beyond its domestic schedule, ghost/Yoru no Hate has already secured international visibility through selections at the Animation Is Film Festival 2026 in the United States, Scotland Loves Anime 2026, and the 13th New Chitose Airport International Animation Film Festival, cementing its status as one of the most anticipated original cinematic works of the decade.
