The long-running television anime adaptation of Detective Conan reached an emotional milestone with the broadcast of episode 1216, bringing a decisive resolution to a three-part murder mystery while finally delivering on decades of romantic tension between high school sleuth Heiji Hattori and his childhood companion Kazuha Toyama.
Adapting the narrative arc from volume 106 of Gosho Aoyama's ongoing manga in Weekly Shonen Sunday, the Osaka-centered mystery unfolded within the Naniwa Arts Theater. An actor's suspicious fatal fall sparked a sequence of theatrical killings staged like marionettes, bearing an ominous message referencing a demonic puppeteer. Amid navigating the tangled evidence alongside Conan, Heiji remained fixated on securing his long-delayed confession at the sunlit observation deck of Naniwa Harukas, aiming to match Shinichi Kudo's historic confession beneath London's Big Ben.
A Long-Awaited Confession
Despite habitual interruptions and the complications of the theatrical murder investigation, the rooftop encounter came to fruition without foul play or sabotage. Following the closure of the case, Heiji confessed his feelings to Kazuha, walking away hand-in-hand as Ran Mouri and Kazuha's mother observed from a distance. The emotional payoff closes out years of comical missteps and near-misses that defined the Osaka duo since their debut in the late 1990s.
The sequence carried an extra layer of nostalgia through its musical direction, integrating Mai Kuraki's ballad "Togetsukyou ~Kimi Omofu~" as an insert track. The song originally served as the theme for the 2017 theatrical film Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter, establishing a thematic throughline back to Kuraki's foundational work on 2003's Crossroad in the Ancient Capital. The inclusion underlined the shared history of both characters across nearly three decades of animated productions at TMS Entertainment.
