To mark the 25th anniversary of Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door, official details have been revealed regarding a nationwide Japanese theatrical re-release featuring a brand-new 4K digital remaster. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and originally animated by studio Bones in collaboration with Sunrise, the 2001 theatrical feature remains a high-water mark for cinematic anime production.
Return to Mars
Set chronologically between episodes 22 and 23 of the original 1998 TV series, the story follows Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, and Ed as they investigate a devastating bio-terrorist attack in Alba City on Mars. The plot escalates when a massive 300 million woolong bounty is placed on the terrorist responsible, leading the Bebop crew into a conflict with Vincent Volaju—a soldier presumed dead from a past military experiment.
Accompanying the remaster announcement is a commemorative visual illustrated by character designer and chief animation director Toshihiro Kawamoto. The piece features background art crafted by art director Atsushi Morikawa and graphic layout work by Toshiaki Uesugi of Mach 55 Go. Studio Bones and Sunrise have confirmed that limited theatrical gifts and anniversary merchandise will accompany the nationwide screenings beginning October 30, 2026.

Director Shinichiro Watanabe personal supervised the 4K restoration process to preserve the film's original cel aesthetics, fluid action direction choreographed by Yutaka Nakamura, and iconic musical score composed by Yoko Kanno.
