The renowned artist and character designer Yoshitaka Amano will be a featured guest at LightBox Expo, running October 23 through 25 at the Pasadena Convention Center in California. During the celebration of digital and traditional concept artists, Amano is slated to conduct live interviews, host fan signings, and formally receive the Lifetime Achievement honor at the annual Concept Art Awards.
A Formative Legacy
Amano started his career in the anime medium at age 15 upon joining Tatsunoko Production, quickly lending his delicate linework and avant-garde sensibilities to historic productions. He became globally recognized for establishing the ethereal aesthetic of Square Enix's Final Fantasy franchise, defining the visual identity of early entries through iconic character portraits, logo illustrations, and monster designs. His signature ink-and-watercolor approach also defined the Gothic fantasy landscapes of Hideyuki Kikuchi's Vampire Hunter D novels, alongside an acclaimed graphic novel collaboration with author Neil Gaiman on Sandman: The Dream Hunters.
In recent years, Amano has continued pushing narrative animation initiatives. Aside from penning character concepts for the Netflix sci-fi series Exception and spearheading Gibiate, the visionary artist recently founded Los Angeles-based Yoshitaka Amano Inc. to oversee development on ZAN, an upcoming limited anime series adapted from his long-gestating DEVA ZAN mythology.
