Few figures loom as large over modern media as Osamu Tezuka, universally known as the God of Manga. From seminal works like Astro Boy and Black Jack to sophisticated gekiga masterpieces, Tezuka laid the foundational architecture for the global anime and manga industry we know today. Yet, despite his monumental impact, contemporary audiences sometimes overlook his enduring significance compared to titans like Walt Disney or Hayao Miyazaki.
Filmmaker Jason Andrew Cohn aims to change that narrative with his upcoming feature-length documentary, TEZUKA! God of Manga. In an exclusive interview, Cohn sheds light on the visionary's complex personality, his fierce competitiveness, and the dark, nihilistic undertones that often characterized his mature storytelling. Following unexpected funding hurdles, the project has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring this definitive portrait of Tezuka's life to completion.
