Manga creator Shohei Manabe has announced that he will draw a brand new one-shot for his acclaimed crime series Ushijima the Loan Shark. The special chapter will be showcased exclusively at an upcoming dedicated exhibition held at Yurakucho Marui in Tokyo from September 19 through October 4.
According to announcements shared by Manabe, the narrative takes place a decade following the conclusion of the main series. While initial author statements indicated a 38-page length, Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine listed the manuscript at 34 pages. Manabe has clarified that there are currently no plans to distribute or publish the one-shot outside of the physical exhibition space.
A Modern Classic of Seinen Crime
Launched in Weekly Big Comic Spirits in 2004, Ushijima the Loan Shark established itself as a brutally honest, unflinching examination of the predatory underworld of illegal lending and societal desperation in modern urban Japan. The original run concluded in March 2019 across 46 collected volumes, earning prestigious recognition including a win at the 56th Shogakukan Manga Awards.
Over the years, the sprawling franchise has inspired multiple successful live-action film adaptations, television series, and several spinoff manga exploring peripheral underworld figures and side stories. This upcoming anniversary one-shot marks a rare return to the core continuity by Manabe himself, giving longtime readers a glimpse into the post-finale fates of those touched by Ushijima's grim financial web.
