The production team behind To You in the Beyond (Doko Yori mo Tooi Basho ni Iru Kimi e), the anticipated anime film adaptation of Akiko Abe’s acclaimed novel, has dropped a compilation of six character promotional videos ahead of its autumn theatrical release. Distributed by Shochiku, the film is scheduled to open across Japanese cinemas on October 9, with international distribution details yet to be announced.
Alongside the promotional footage, the staff expanded the voice cast by introducing four new actors and their respective roles: Sumire Uesaka joins as Tamaki Mishima, Kazuki and Nao's honors student classmate; Wataru Hatano portrays Shōji Aiba; Nobuhiko Okamoto takes on the role of Kazuki's friend Akimitsu Yamu; and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka steps in as Yoshiki Suga, a classmate who treats the protagonist with a fierce rivalrous spirit.
Creative Talent and Staff Pedigree
The project is helmed by director Junichi Wada, recognized for his vibrant work on HIGH CARD, operating out of animation studio TMS Entertainment. The screenplay is penned by Sayaka Kuwamura, whose previous writing credits include Strobe Edge and the emotionally resonant Josee, The Tiger and the Fish. Meanwhile, Hechima handles character design and chief animation supervision duties, and musician Tota contributes the opening theme song titled "Olive."
Mystery on a Remote Island
The narrative follows Kazuki Tsukigase, a young high school student who transfers to a remote island to escape his past and anyone familiar with him. Upon exploring a local inlet rumoured to be a place where individuals mysteriously vanish, he discovers an unconscious girl. When she regains consciousness at a local clinic, she can recall nothing of her identity except her name, Nao, her age of 16, and a whispered reference to the year 1974.
Originally published by Shueisha in October 2017 with illustrations by syo5, the story has since expanded into other mediums, including a manga adaptation by Haruka Chino launched on Shueisha's Tonari no Young Jump platform in August 2025.
