Cyberpunk icon The Ghost in the Shell (Kōkaku Kidōtai THE GHOST IN THE SHELL) is heading back to the screen. Bandai Namco Filmworks officially announced that a brand-new anime project is currently in the works, keeping Science SARU attached to helm the animation after their recent critically discussed television outing.
The announcement was dropped during the Dover Street Market Ginza's open house press preview for the collaborative "Geeks Rule" apparel line. While corporate producers kept specific format details under wraps—leaving fans speculating whether this fresh undertaking will manifest as a feature film, an OVA series, or a direct television continuation—the confirmation of Science SARU's return sets high expectations for distinct visual artistry.
The Creative Legacy
The franchise's recent 10-episode television run introduced a bold stylistic direction under debut director Mokochan, with scripts penned by novelist Toh Enjoe and character designs by Shūhei Handa. Iconic voice talent including Maaya Sakamoto as Major Motoko Kusanagi and Kazuhiro Yamaji as Daisuke Aramaki anchored the cybernetic investigations, backed by an eclectic musical landscape crafted by Taisei Iwasaki, Ryō Konishi, and Yuki Kanesaka.
The underlying production committee brings together heavy hitters including Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, Science SARU, and original franchise pillars Production I.G, signaling a deeply collaborative effort to continue expanding Masamune Shirow's enduring speculative sci-fi universe.
