Masamune Shirow’s legendary cyberpunk milestone Ghost in the Shell is expanding its horizon once again. During a special public preview event held at Dover Street Market Ginza, a brand new anime project was officially announced, confirming that animation powerhouse Science SARU will return to helm the production following their work on the recent television series.
Since Shirow first published the foundational manga in Kodansha's Young Magazine in 1989, the franchise has continually redefined science fiction through Mamoru Oshii’s iconic 1995 feature film and numerous subsequent adaptations. The momentum reached a new peak with the recent broadcast and streaming of the television series produced by Science SARU.
Science SARU Expands the Cyberpunk Frontier
Known globally for critically acclaimed works such as Inu-Oh, The Colors Within, and the smash-hit adaptation of Dan Da Dan, Science SARU has established an unmistakable visual pedigree. With the studio firmly attached to this upcoming expansion, expectations from the international community are exceptionally high.
The surprise announcement was distributed via flyers to attendees at the 'Open House' press preview in Tokyo, which celebrated a collaboration between apparel project GEEKS RULE and the current television iteration. Accompanying the news, a special teaser visual was revealed to mark the commencement of production, with future updates scheduled via official Bandai Namco Filmworks channels.
Expanding the Franchise Ecosystem
Alongside the animation announcement, the 10-episode television series is slated for a Blu-ray BOX release packed with behind-the-scenes making-of features, clean opening and ending sequences, and exclusive storyboards. Meanwhile, physical exhibition merchandise from the recent 'Ghost and the Shell' event remains available through online retail platforms.
Fans looking to connect can also participate in the official Discord server launched recently to foster global community discussions. Furthermore, Masamune Shirow and Naoki Azuma’s ongoing manga spin-off Glitch Witch continues serialization on YanMaga Web, exploring the intricate corporate and artificial intelligence conspiracies leading up to Section 9’s formation.
As this iconic cyberpunk universe ventures into its next chapter, the convergence of Shirow’s visionary worldbuilding and Science SARU’s fluid animation style promises a striking addition to the franchise's storied legacy.
