Author and director Takehiko Inoue's cinematic masterpiece The First Slam Dunk will return to theaters across Japan under the banner THE FIRST SLAM DUNK 2027 in cinema. The limited nationwide re-release is scheduled to run from March 20 to April 1, 2027.
Originally released in December 2022, The First Slam Dunk redefined modern sports animation by shifting the narrative focus onto Shohoku High's point guard, Ryota Miyagi. Blending deeply personal backstory with a kinetic frame-by-frame adaptation of the climatic Inter-High match against Sannoh Kogyo, the feature grossed over 16.67 billion yen in Japan alone during its initial run.
The announcement follows a series of special community revival screenings across Tokyo, confirming that the legacy of Inoue's legendary manga series—which has exceeded 185 million copies in circulation worldwide—remains as vibrant as ever. Detailed theater venue lists and ticketing schedules will be announced by the production committee in future updates.
