Webtoon Origins
Written by YC and illustrated by Rakyeon, the manhwa debuted on Naver Webtoon in November 2020 and quickly dominated digital platforms globally. Its localized Japanese serialization under the title Nyugaku Yohei topped the LINE Manga yearly rankings in both 2023 and 2024, cementing its status as an elite action title.
The narrative follows Ijin Yu, the sole survivor of a tragic childhood plane crash who grew up isolated as a mercenary in a foreign warzone. After recovering his long-lost memories, Ijin returns home to normal civilian life, enrolling in high school alongside his younger sister. However, his lethal combat instincts and unwavering loyalty are quickly put to the test as he takes on school bullies, street gangs, and organized crime syndicates to protect his family.
This adaptation also marks the beginning of a major strategic co-production partnership between Crunchyroll, HAYATE, and WEBTOON Entertainment subsidiary LINE Digital Frontier Corporation. Announced during NYCC 2026, the alliance aims to bring approximately 15 selected webtoon titles into the animated space, with HAYATE spearheading development alongside the streaming giant.
