During the Crunchyroll Showcase at New York Comic Con 2026, industry heavyweights officially pulled back the curtain on one of the most anticipated webtoon adaptations in recent memory. The military-school action phenomenon Teenage Mercenary, originally written by YC and illustrated by Rakhyun, is officially making the transition to television animation. Scheduled for a 2027 premiere, the adaptation has fans of high-octane webtoons buzzing with anticipation, especially given the pedigree of the creative team assembled for the project.
Animation production will be handled by J.C.Staff, who have enlisted a veteran creative roster to bring the intense martial arts and tactical espionage of the source material to life. Manabu Ono, known for his work on Dead Mount Death Play, is attached to direct the series and oversee series composition. Meanwhile, character designs and chief animation direction are in the capable hands of Kouji Haneda (Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf). To top it all off, the score will be composed by industry legend Hiroyuki Sawano, famous for his iconic musical work on Attack on Titan.
Global Phenomenon Headed to the Screen
Since its launch on Naver Webtoon in November 2020, Teenage Mercenary has grown into an absolute juggernaut, pulling in an astonishing 2.84 billion views globally across multiple languages including English, French, German, and Spanish. The story follows Yu Ijin, a young man who survived a tragic plane crash as a child and grew up stranded in a foreign warzone as an elite mercenary. After finally returning to his home country and reuniting with his remaining family, Ijin attempts to live a peaceful high school life—only to find his formidable combat skills constantly required to protect his loved ones.
