Sega and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio have pulled back the curtain on a sweeping narrative trailer for Stranger Than Heaven, formerly developed under the codename Project Century. The upcoming historical crime drama spans a turbulent fifty-year saga across Japan's modern era, tracking the desperate lives of outsiders searching for belonging.
The newly premiered footage focuses heavily on the opening act set in Kokura, Fukuoka in 1915. It chronicles the harrowing journey of Makoto Daito—portrayed by Yū Shirota—a young boy born to an American father and Japanese mother who suffers relentless persecution in San Francisco. Seeking refuge, Makoto stows away on a suspicious merchant vessel named the Orpheus, captained by Snoop Dogg, setting off a chain of events that alters his destiny forever.
A Half-Century Across Japan
Ryu ga Gotoku Studio is stepping outside its familiar modern crime frameworks to explore a sprawling timeline of Japanese history. The narrative leaps across multiple distinct eras and locations: Kokura in 1915, Kure in 1929, Minami in 1943, Atami in 1951, and the iconic fictional district of Kamurocho in Shinjuku, Tokyo, by 1965.
The title boasts an extraordinary ensemble cast that bridges international music icons and legendary Japanese cinema figures. Alongside Yū Shirota and Snoop Dogg, the roster includes Moeka Hoshi, Tori Kelly, Akio Ōtsuka, Tokuma Nishioka, Satoshi Fujihara, Cordell Broadus, Ado, Takashi Ukaji voicing a CG model based on the late, legendary actor Bunta Sugawara, and Takaya Kuroda, renowned for voicing Kazuma Kiryu across the Like a Dragon franchise.
Sega confirmed that official consent was secured from the Sugawara family, utilizing archival materials and photographs provided by Toei Company Ltd. to recreate the iconic star of Battles Without Honor and Humanity through advanced CG design.
Release and Expansion Plans
The theme song for the project features a powerhouse collaboration between Snoop Dogg, Satoshi Fujihara, Ado, and Tori Kelly. Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch on January 15 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam, alongside a day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass. Additionally, Sega announced that the ambitious game is inspiring a live-action film adaptation produced by Netflix.
