The legendary Space Battleship Yamato franchise is returning to the big screen with an ambitious new project titled Space Battleship Yamato √2199. Following initial reports back in 2024, recent updates confirm that the upcoming anime film is a major collaborative co-production between Production I.G and studio khara.
Creative heavyweights are steering the helm of this science fiction revival. khara president Hideaki Anno—renowned globally for Neon Genesis Evangelion and Shin Godzilla—is co-directing alongside veteran mecha designer and director Yutaka Izubuchi. In addition to his co-director duties, Anno takes on key roles as planner and executive producer, signaling a distinct stylistic vision for the cinematic return.
Originally created as a landmark television series that aired from 1974 to 1975, the franchise follows humanity's desperate voyage across the stars. The foundational premise centers on the historic vessel embarking on a perilous journey to the distant planet Iscandar to retrieve a device capable of healing a war-torn, radiation-poisoned Earth.
While recent years saw the continuation of the modern continuity through the Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 remake series and its concluding chapters, this new theatrical endeavor promises to chart an entirely distinct trajectory. With khara securing comprehensive production rights from Voyager Holdings, fans of classic mecha anime can anticipate a fresh interpretation of Yoshinobu Nishizaki's timeless space opera.
