The theatrical release of Space Academy Kotetsukun Movie: Find the Alien That Slipped Out! (Eiga "Uchuu Nanchara Kotetsukun" Ukkari Doutekita Uchuujin o Sagase!) has officially launched across Ion Cinemas and theaters nationwide starting September 11, 2026. To mark the opening weekend, a special stage greeting was held on September 12, bringing together voice actress Natsumi Fujiwara (Kotetsukun), multi-talented artist and theme song performer Shoko Nakagawa, and National Astronomical Observatory of Japan lecturer Masaaki Hiramatsu alongside the titular feline astronaut.
Opening the event in character, Fujiwara greeted the audience with Kotetsukun's signature energy before reflecting on returning to the role for the big screen. The cinematic scale allowed the production to leverage immersive sound design and impactful theatrical acoustics, delivering a richer sense of scale than the television series. Nakagawa expressed profound enthusiasm, having performed numerous alien voice roles in addition to co-writing and recording the theme song "Uchuu no Nanchara Nakama." Describing the project as a lifelong dream tied to her enduring fascination with Jupiter and astronomy, Nakagawa's dynamic presence set an enthusiastic tone for the gathered families and fans.
Scientific Authenticity Meets All-Ages Animation
Despite its accessible, gentle aesthetic, NAOJ lecturer Hiramatsu emphasized that the film maintains a surprisingly rigorous approach to actual space science. Blending animated storytelling with real astronomical imagery and computer graphics, the production aims to spark genuine curiosity among younger viewers regarding exoplanets and space exploration. Nakagawa praised the project as the ultimate educational cosmic anime, joking that audiences would graduate from the theater as certified planetary experts.
The celebration also featured a live vocal performance of the theme song by Nakagawa, complete with choreography demonstrations and a special guest appearance by Kotetsukun. Additional announcements revealed upcoming collaborative promotional videos alongside line sticker releases. Special greeting screenings featuring guest characters such as Gokigen Panda and Konesumi are scheduled to run at MOVIX Hashimoto through September 21.
