The popular Japanese gaming creator collective Majime ni Yaba City is making the leap into original animation. Production company Shin-Ei Animation has unveiled Chokotto Yaba City, a fast-paced short-form slapstick gag comedy anime set to premiere on YouTube starting October 1.
Despite its origins as a mascot vehicle for the creator group, the production has assembled high-profile comedy and narrative talent behind the scenes. Studio Lesprit handles animation duties under the direction of Tomohiro Tsukimisato (How Clumsy you are, Miss Ueno), while veteran screenwriter Yuko Kakihara—known for series composition on landmark hits such as The Apothecary Diaries, Chihayafuru, and Cells at Work!!—pens the scripts.
Absurdist City Life
The series is set in a chaotic metropolis plagued by municipal corruption, skyrocketing inflation, and outrageous social dynamics. The town is governed by a lazy feline-chick hybrid mayor named Nekohiyoko alongside an eccentric cast of resident oddballs, ranging from a sarcastic parasitic mushroom to a sentient baseball.
