In a milestone moment for interactive media, Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology announced the recipients of this year's Order of Culture award. Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary game designer behind industry-defining masterpieces like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, has officially been named among the honories. This marks the first time in history that a figure from the video game industry has received the prestigious recognition, which is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Japanese culture.
Speaking at a press conference held at Nintendo's headquarters in Kyoto, Miyamoto maintained his signature humility, emphasizing that interactive entertainment is inherently collaborative. He noted that because video games are crafted through the collective efforts of entire teams rather than a single individual, he accepts the historic distinction as an honor for all the developers and creators he has worked alongside throughout his career.
The formal presentation ceremony will take place on November 3, coinciding with Japan's national Culture Day, where the Emperor will personally present the award. Miyamoto's latest accolade follows his 2019 designation as a Person of Cultural Merit, as well as international honors such as Spain's Prince of Asturias Award in 2012, further cementing his legacy as a cultural titan whose work transcends traditional boundaries of art and technology.
