The cinematic adaptation of FromSoftware's bleak, masterclass action title Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is hurtling toward its premiere. Titled Sekiro: No Defeat, the production team has released a blistering battle scene clip ahead of its upcoming Japanese theatrical run, giving audiences a visceral taste of the blade-clashing choreography awaiting them.

The feature will grace Japanese cinemas for a strictly limited three-week engagement beginning September 4. Meanwhile, international audiences will be able to experience the carnage via Crunchyroll, which has locked in exclusive worldwide streaming rights for 2026 across most major territories. Prior to its commercial rollout, the film earned critical curiosity during an out-of-competition screening at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Festival.

A Star-Studded Return to Ashina

Purists will rejoice knowing that the iconic Japanese voice cast from the original 2019 masterpiece is stepping back into their respective roles. Leading the charge is Daisuke Namikawa as the one-armed wolf Sekiro, flanked by Miyuki Satō as young Lord Kuro and Kenjirō Tsuda as the formidable Genichiro Ashina. The roster also brings back Jin Urayama as the Sculptor, Shizuka Itō as Emma, Akimitsu Takase as Hanbei, Takaya Hashi as Owl, and Tetsuo Kanao as Isshin Ashina.

Behind the lens, Kenichi Kutsuna is directing the project at studio Qzil.la, working from a script penned by Takuya Satou. Character designs are spearheaded by Takahiro Kishida, recognized for his work on Durarara!!, while Shūta Hasunuma crafts the atmospheric score, anchored by the late composer Ryuichi Sakamoto's haunting piece "Blu." Additionally, production leadership has confirmed a strict human-first ethos, issuing a formal statement assuring audiences that no artificial intelligence tools were utilized in the creation of the anime.

From Controller to Celluloid

Originally released in March 2019 across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, Hidetaka Miyazaki’s brutal third-person masterpiece captivated the industry by selling over two million copies within ten days. Activision originally outlined the premise of the journey:

Set in the re-imagined world of late 1500s Sengoku Japan; a brutal, bloody period of constant life-and-death conflict, in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice you are the “one-armed wolf,” a disgraced and disfigured warrior rescued from the brink of death.

Activision, Publisher

With high-profile studio pedigree and returning creative talent, Sekiro: No Defeat promises to translate the razor-thin margins of victory and defeat from interactive gaming into a striking visual epic.
