Studio SHAFT's long-awaited feature sequel, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising, has shattered commercial expectations by surpassing 1 billion yen at the Japanese box office within its first four days of theatrical screening following its August 28 debut in Japan.
This impressive four-day opening puts Walpurgisnacht Rising ahead of the pace set by its predecessor, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion. Released in 2013, Rebellion ultimately grossed over 2 billion yen during its Japanese theatrical run. Serving as the direct continuation to Rebellion, the new film marks the franchise's first flagship cinematic entry in thirteen years. Core creative leads have reunited for the milestone production, with Akiyuki Shinbo serving as chief director alongside director Yukihiro Miyamoto.
Box Office Success and Key Visual
Alongside the milestone commercial numbers, the production committee dropped a new commercial trailer and revealed the film's third key visual, illustrated directly by original character designer Ume Aoki.
Conceived by the creative quartet Magica Quartet (Shinbo, Aoki, writer Gen Urobuchi, and producer Atsuhiro Iwakami), the original 2011 television anime reshaped modern magical girl storytelling. Over the years, the franchise expanded into feature films, manga adaptations, and mobile games, including the newly launched Magia Exedra.
