Toei Animation has formally unveiled a brand-new television anime spinoff within its long-running magical girl franchise titled Dual Shadow ~Precure Villain Heroines~, slated to premiere next year. Unlike the majority of previous franchise entries and adult-oriented revivals, this upcoming project will feature an original storyline and a fresh roster of characters, leaning into one of the brand's most beloved tropes.
Redefining Heroism
The concept directly echoes a foundational narrative tradition established in 2009's Fresh Precure!, where the antagonist Higashi Setsuna (Eas) famously crossed alignment lines to become Cure Passion. Since that landmark shift, reformed antagonists have regularly served as emotional anchors throughout the franchise's two-decade history. Dual Shadow looks set to place this dynamic center stage, exploring the intricate morality and redemption arcs of villainous heroines from the ground up.
The announcement arrives during an active era for the magical girl juggernaut. The 23rd mainline entry, Star Detective Precure!, debuted on February 1 and continues its broadcast, supported internationally by Crunchyroll. The franchise also recently demonstrated its box-office momentum with Star Detective Precure! The Movie: The Mysterious Garden and the Secret of 2 People, which earned 446 million yen in its opening weekend in Japanese theaters. Combined with adult-focused anniversary sequels such as Power of Hope: Precure Full Bloom and Mahō Tsukai Precure!!: MIRAI DAYS, Toei Animation continues to broaden the scope of its flagship property. More details are available on the official Dual Shadow project website.
