Fans of post-apocalyptic mecha masterworks gathered at TOHO Cinemas Ikebukuro for a landmark celebration commemorating three decades since the broadcast of Mobile Suit Gundam X. The September 2026 special screening event featured dual talk shows bringing together essential creative talent, offering a rare retrospective look at the 1996 Sunrise production.
Director Shinji Takamatsu, character designer Yoshitoshi Nishimura, and mechanical designer Junya Ishigaki joined voice actor Wataru Takagi—who famously breathed life into protagonist Garrod Ran—on stage. The panel discussed everything from the rigorous production schedules of the mid-1990s to the thematic underpinnings of the series, particularly the narrative weight assigned to the Newtype concept under series composition writer Hiroyuki Kawasaki.
Production Secrets and Mechanical Design
Reflecting on the grueling production environment, Ishigaki recalled juggling simultaneous responsibilities on The Vision of Escaflowne alongside Gundam X. Discussion also turned to specific episode selections curated for the audience, including fan-favorite outings and pivotal mecha debuts like the heavy-armor Gawilder variant. Takamatsu elaborated on how the iconic Satellite Cannon concept emerged organically from initial mechanical designs rather than top-down mandates.
