Bandai Namco Filmworks and Sunrise have officially confirmed that Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO will premier on Japanese television in April 2027. Directed by veteran filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) with studio SOLA Animation handling production, the upcoming series represents a foundational chapter in Sunrise's cross-media "RG Project". The "RG Project" operates on an ambitious narrative strategy: a television anime series and a companion action game titled GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT share a single universe and chronological canon while examining historical events from distinct perspectives. Conceptualized by director Kamiyama alongside acclaimed hard science-fiction author Toh EnJoe, the storyline seeks to re-evaluate the core existential question of why giant mechanical weapons—Gundams—become necessary within human conflict. Set roughly 100 years prior to the events of the game, the anime establishes the historical genesis of this world.
The creative collective behind RG XARX-ZERO features notable industry talent. Eiichi Shimizu handles mechanical designs for the main Gundam units, while STATO provides initial character concept designs adapted for screen animation by chief animation director Minoko Takasu. The musical score is composed by Go Shiina. Parallel to the broadcast announcement, publisher Bandai Namco revealed that GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam on March 5, 2027, featuring choices that build directly upon the foundational events established in the anime.
