Sunrise and Bandai Namco Filmworks have lifted the curtain on official release details for Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO, setting the stage for the highly anticipated prequel to the record-shattering Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film. A specialized livestream event revealed that the feature is slated to open in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027, before making its international jump to North American screens in February 2027.
Alongside the scheduling announcement, production heads showcased fresh promotional footage, giving enthusiasts an extended look at the upcoming mecha action. Director Mitsuo Fukuda returns to helm the project at Sunrise, working from scenarios originally drafted two decades ago alongside the late writer Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita. According to the production team, much of the dialogue recording was finished years prior, bridging a long-standing narrative gap in the cosmic era timeline.
Returning Cast and Production Pedigree
The upcoming feature brings back the iconic ensemble cast from across the Cosmic Era timeline. Fan-favorite pilot Shinn Asuka will once again be voiced by Kenichi Suzumura, alongside Sōichirō Hoshi as Kira Yamato, Rie Tanaka as Lacus Clyne, and Akira Ishida as Athrun Zala. Character designer Hisashi Hirai and mechanical animation director Satoshi Shigeta also resume their respective roles to maintain the signature aesthetic of the franchise.
The original theatrical film, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM, dominated Japanese box offices upon its debut in January 2024, securing the highest three-day opening earnings in the history of the entire Gundam franchise. With a completed script, finished storyboards, and fully recorded vocal tracks, Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO arrives with immense anticipation as it prepares to expand the universe further.
