In an unexpected partnership bridging traditional broadcast and digital-native content, TV Tokyo has announced a joint venture with studio Plott for the upcoming original short-form anime series Mekazumurai. Featuring main character drafts by Shaman King creator Hiroyuki Takei, the project marks TV Tokyo's first foray into producing anime designed primarily around YouTube and social media distribution.
Studio Plott has steadily built a massive reputation for producing viral short-form animated series such as Teikou Penguin and Konketsu no Karekore, boasting a cumulative 24 billion views across their channel network. With Mekazumurai, the studio shifts gears into a stylized blend of Japanese folklore and pop action, set in a contemporary Japan where mysterious gates known as "Kimon" connect to alternate realms. These portals spawn mechanical spirits called "Youkai," prompting an elite organization of samurai to step forward and wield異能 (supernatural) weapons known as "Katana" to protect humanity.
The narrative centers on Chiaki Kasumi, a young samurai whose cursed katana actually embodies the very mechanical spirit power he is tasked with cutting down. This enemies-within motif drives the high-octane action. Alongside Chiaki, the main voice cast features Kentaro Mashiro as Chiaki Kasumi, Riona Yamashita as Yuna Fujimiya, and Ayumu Mizukami as Kiyoharu Obana. The production has also confirmed its premiere timeline: vertical teaser shorts will begin rolling out across YouTube, X, Instagram, and TikTok on November 2, 2026, followed by a preseason episode on November 20, and the official series debut in spring 2027.
Creator and Staff Vision
Reflecting on the collaboration, character designer Hiroyuki Takei expressed excitement over seeing his rough concepts develop into a fully realized modern action framework. Meanwhile, Plott CEO Shota Okuno noted that the project's foundational framework solidified upon meeting Takei, eventually growing into a cross-media ambition capable of reaching global audiences alongside TV Tokyo's robust distribution network.
TV Tokyo Animation Division General Manager Ryuyuki Ito emphasized the unique blend of traditional samurai aesthetics and contemporary pop sensibilities that the creative team brings to the table, underscoring the broadcaster's commitment to exploring flexible distribution models beyond conventional television programming schedules.
