The upcoming theatrical anime project Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) has officially slated its premiere for December 11, 2026. Ahead of its theatrical debut, the production committee has rolled out a fresh character promotional video focusing on the deceased imperial consort Ruochen and her former lady-in-waiting, Inshan, shedding light on the film's core mystery.
The original light novel series, written by Natsu Hyuuga and published by Imagica Infos under the Hero Bunko imprint, has surpassed 57 million copies globally. The narrative follows Maomao, a sharp-witted young poison taster navigating the treacherous political intrigue and palace mysteries of the inner court. Following the broadcast of the television series spanning multiple seasons, this feature film introduces an entirely original storyline penned by Hyuuga herself, centering on a mysterious treasure hidden within a water metropolis.
Casting details have also been locked in for the film's pivotal dramatic figures. Renowned voice actress Miyuki Sawashiro steps into the role of the tragic late consort Ruochen, while acclaimed actress Ai Mikami lends her voice to Inshan, marking her first major anime role following her morning drama appearances. The newly released PV hints at the emotional weight carried by both characters, as Maomao begins to unravel the haunting truth behind a request left unfulfilled for half a decade.
Reflecting on her casting, Ai Mikami shared her enthusiasm for joining the franchise. "Because I was already a huge fan of the television series, I was genuinely thrilled to receive the role," Mikami noted. "The feature film unfolds as a grand-scale mystery adventure. Whether you are an avid follower of the novels and anime or experiencing the world for the first time, it is an experience crafted for the big screen."
The production is spearheaded by director Norihori Naganuma under animation studio TOHO animation STUDIO, with scripts handled by Yuko Kakihara and character designs by Yukiko Nakatani. Musical composition is managed by a collaborative trio consisting of Satoru Kosanji, Kevin Penkin, and Alisa Okehazama. Fans can anticipate further announcements, including the main trailer and theme song artist reveals, during the upcoming three-year broadcast anniversary special scheduled for October 22.
