During the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2026 (Kyomaf), an extensive stage presentation for the upcoming historical anime project Kaze o Tsugumono revealed a wave of major updates, including broadcast windows, theatrical screening dates, and musical collaborations.
Helmed by director Tomohiro Kawamura and writer Yutaka Narui, the original TV anime brings a fresh artistic interpretation to the turbulent Bakumatsu era and the legend of the Shinsengumi. The production is a collaborative effort between Aniplex, Live2D Creative Studio, and studio Drive, utilizing advanced Live2D animation techniques to forge a distinct visual identity. The television series is officially scheduled to premiere in January 2027 across 28 stations on the CBC/TBS network's 'Agaru Anime' programming block. Prior to the broadcast, a theatrical prelude film titled Kaze o Tsugumono -Hajimari- will open across Japanese cinemas on November 13, 2026, for a limited two-week run.
Star-Studded Cast and Musical Collaborations
The Kyomaf panel brought together prominent voice actors Daisuke Sakuma (voicing protagonist Junsuke Tachikawa), Yuki Kaji (Soji Okita), and Kouki Uchiyama (Toshizo Hijikata) to discuss the project's unique direction and behind-the-scenes recording sessions. The event also unveiled additional cast additions, including Takaya Kamikawa in a special cameo role as Shinbe Umeda.
Music plays an integral role in establishing the moody atmosphere of the series. Kishida Shigeru of the rock band Quruli is composing the score. Furthermore, the opening theme for the television anime will be performed as a collaboration between Quruli and Hitsujibungaku titled 'Kaze o Tsugumono', while the ending theme and theatrical film's main theme, 'Namida no Kawa', will be handled by Hitsujibungaku paired with Quruli.
Extensive real-world promotional tie-ins in Kyoto and Tokyo are slated to accompany the release, featuring temple collaborations, original Goshuin stamps, and wrap trains on the municipal subway lines ahead of the winter theatrical rollout.
