Toho has officially launched the TOHO presents New Kaiju General Election, opening the doors for a massive public fan vote to determine an entirely original creature that will join the pantheon of cinematic monsters. This ambitious campaign invites audiences to shape the future of practical monster filmmaking by selecting a brand-new adversary or ally for the franchise's legendary lineup.
The competition features eight distinct kaiju candidates whose official silhouettes and conceptual profiles are currently hidden behind a promotional countdown. Visual development and creature design for all eight contenders are being handled by the renowned visual production studio Shirogumi, working in close collaboration with Toho to bridge classic mid-century creature aesthetics with contemporary design sensibilities.
The election is structured into two competitive phases. The first voting window runs from September 16 through October 4, narrowing the field down to the top four contenders. Following a special YouTube livestreamed interim results broadcast in mid-October, the second phase will pit the finalists against one another until polls close on October 25. The ultimate winner will be unveiled on November 3 during the annual Godzilla Fest 2026 event.
Beyond securing a starring role in the subsequent Fest Godzilla short film debuting in 2027 and beyond, the victorious kaiju will receive extensive multimedia merchandising support. To amplify the excitement, comedy duo Haru to Hikoki (Gunpi and Tetsuro Tsuoka) alongside entertainer Akari Nibu have been appointed as official cheering ambassadors, set to host upcoming livestreams and festival stages.
As Tokusatsu enthusiasts and creature feature veterans cast their daily ballots, anticipation continues to mount not only for the outcome of the general election, but also for director Takashi Yamazaki's upcoming domestic feature project, currently slated for a theatrical release on Godzilla Day, November 3, 2026.
