Digital manga reading platform Comikey has expanded its licensing agreement with major Japanese publisher Hakusensha to bring a fresh slate of shōjo manga titles to English-speaking audiences digitally. Launching the initiative is author sora’s dark romantic comedy Crashout Schoolgirl and Degen Teacher (Tsuiraku JK to Haijin Kyōshi), with its first seven chapters available to read immediately.
A Mixing of Classics and Modern Favorites
While Comikey has not yet detailed the complete release schedule for the incoming Hakusensha catalog, promotional material released alongside the announcement confirms a varied mix of legacy classics and modern reader favorites. Featured titles in the teaser lineup include:
- Kōcha Ōji (The Tea Prince)
- Gakuen Babysitters
- Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances)
- Moon Child
- Ōkami-Heika no Hanayome (The Wolf King's Bride)
- Mikado no Shihō
Several of these works, such as Masami Tsuda’s seminal Kare Kano and Reiko Shimizu’s sci-fi shōjo drama Moon Child, previously received physical English releases in North America. However, the majority of the announced lineup will be receiving an official English digital release for the first time.
Expanding Digital Reach
This initiative builds upon Comikey's initial 2021 partnership with Hakusensha, adding to an expanding digital library that already features major Japanese publishing partners such as Shogakukan, Shinchosha, and Coamix. Alongside the Hakusensha news, Comikey expanded its general catalog this August with several additional series, including Kamiharu Haruno’s Shut Up, Takamori! and Akinoko’s Learning to Love My Cat-like Classmate.
Comikey operates on a hybrid monetization framework where initial chapters and the most recently published chapter are available to read for free, with middle chapters unlocked via its proprietary digital currency.
