The long-running journey of Jaku Amano's gritty cyberpunk thriller A-DO is reaching its destination. The November issue of Kodansha's Monthly Young Magazine confirmed that the series will publish its final chapter in the magazine's upcoming December issue, scheduled to hit shelves on November 18.
The finale follows a tumultuous publication stretch for the dystopian title. The manga briefly paused in October due to Amano experiencing physical health issues before resuming its run on February 19. While the 11th compiled book volume originally projected the series would wrap up with volume 12—which hit Japanese retailers on July 17—the serialization continued slightly beyond that milestone to ensure a fully resolved narrative climax.
A Tense Dystopian Collision
Serialized since June 2019, A-DO quickly drew attention among seinen enthusiasts for its distinct balance of visceral urban tension, kinetic action, and political commentary. Kodansha USA Publishing handles the official English-language distribution, describing the high-stakes setup as follows:
Following a wave of immigration, Japan has became a volatile mix of people and cultures, rocked by the protests of xenophobic extremists unhappy with the new status quo. A brash, job-hopping young woman named Riko is driving her scooter through one such protest when she sees a boy about to get run over by a truck. Riko just manages to shove him out of the way, and, in the hours that follow, she finds herself looking after the boy, named Eito.
Riko takes Eito out for a bowl of ramen, but just as they're about to dig in, Eito is fired upon by a distant army sniper. As the bullet pierces the restaurant window and comes whizzing toward Eito, plant-like tendrils snake out from his arm and stop it in mid-flight. Who in the world is this boy, and why is the army after him?!
The English release has stayed steadily in step, with Kodansha USA shipping the 10th localized volume in September.
