The upcoming A Certain ITEM of Dark Side anime has revealed a new key visual featuring the main characters ahead of the show’s October 9, 2026 premiere. The adaptation continues the massive world-building of Kazuma Kamachi's sprawling universe by shifting focus to the shadows of Academy City.
The production features veteran creative talent from across previous entries in the franchise. Tatsuyuki Nagai returns to direct the series, working alongside character designer Shigeki Kimoto and composer Maiko Iuchi, with animation production handled by studio J.C. STAFF.
Musical artists have also been locked in for the project, with East Of Eden performing the opening theme song “Ghost Sequence” and Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets providing the ending theme “Meltdowner.”
Inside Academy City's Underworld
The narrative centers on ITEM, an elite underground organization of high-level espers executing covert operations for Academy City's ruling factions. The core lineup includes Shizuri Mugino leading with her Meltdowner ability, Riko Takitsubo tracking targets via AIM Stalker, Frenda Seivelun handling traps and explosives, and Saiai Kinuhata using Offense Armor to manipulate nitrogen.
Originating from Kazuma Kamachi's light novel series A Certain Magical Index launched in 2004, the franchise has expanded into multiple acclaimed television series and theatrical projects over two decades.
