A Cultural Landmark Revisited
Originally broadcast during the Fall 2016 season, Yuri!!! On ICE quickly became a global breakout hit, capturing international acclaim for its fluid figure skating choreography and intimate character dynamics. Directed by Sayo Yamamoto (Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine) with original character designs by manga artist Mitsuro Kubo, the 12-episode original series remains one of studio MAPPA's defining works.
The voice cast featured Toshiyuki Toyonaga as Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki, Junichi Suwabe as legendary Russian champion Victor Nikiforov, and Koki Uchiyama as rising star Yuri Plisetsky. Chief episode director Jun Shishido helped steer the ambitious production, which was later followed by an OVA in May 2017.
Big dreams, a shared passion—on the ice, they call it love. But when his idol and five-time champion Victor Nikiforov offers to be his coach, Yuri’s put on a trek for gold and to discover the true meaning of victory!
Despite the cancellation of the long-awaited feature film project Yuri!!! On ICE the movie: Ice Adolescence in April 2024, the franchise's enduring legacy continues to draw passionate audiences, making this 10th anniversary theatrical revival a notable milestone for fans.
