The long-awaited sequel to the dark fantasy romance anime Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) has officially found its animation home. The official X account for the series confirmed that Pierrot Films will produce the upcoming sequel, marking a significant step forward for the adaptation of Mizuho Kusanagi's epic manga.
A Premier Animation Lineage
Pierrot Films is a specialized animation brand established in 2024 by Studio Pierrot. Designed to focus on high-end production values and ambitious action sequencing, the branch has garnered acclaim for its work on Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and the fourth season of Mr. Osomatsu. Transferring Yona of the Dawn to Pierrot Films signals an elevated visual standard for the fantasy series, which originally aired its 24-episode television adaptation under the main Pierrot banner back in 2014.
Princess Yona lives an ideal life as the only princess of her kingdom. Doted on by her father, the king, and protected by her faithful guard Hak, she cherishes the time spent with the man she loves, Su-won. But everything changes on her 16th birthday when tragedy strikes her family.
End of a 16-Year Epic
This animation update arrives alongside a major milestone for the source material. Mizuho Kusanagi launched the fantasy manga in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine in 2009, bringing the narrative to its official conclusion on December 19 after a 16-year serialization run. The 48th and final compiled book volume released in Japan alongside four extra "gaiden" spinoff chapters.
Beyond the original 2014 anime run, Yona of the Dawn previously expanded its universe through three original anime DVDs (OADs) in 2015 and 2016, alongside multiple stage plays and a musical adaptation staged in Tokyo in July 2024.
