In a surprising development for the web novel community, Wuxiaworld founder and original owner Ren, known online as RWX, announced his successful acquisition of the platform back from Tapas Entertainment. This move effectively returns the pioneering translated fiction site to independent ownership nearly five years after its initial acquisition by Kakao Entertainment.
Ren revealed the complete buyback on September 20, confirming that he is once again the sole owner and operator of the service. The timing proved critical, coming right before Kakao Entertainment announced the total closure of its North American webtoon platform, Tapas, scheduled for March 31, 2027. According to Ren, the looming shutdown served as the primary catalyst for his return, noting that without this intervention, Wuxiaworld would have met the same fate.
Rebuilding an Independent Future
Founded originally in 2014 by a passionate fan of Chinese martial arts literature, Wuxiaworld evolved into a cornerstone for English translations of Asian web fiction, eventually expanding its catalog to include popular Korean titles like Overgeared and SSS-Class Revival Hunter. However, the platform's financial landscape has shifted dramatically since its peak years under independent management.
While the service once boasted substantial monthly gross profits prior to the 2021 Kakao acquisition, recent financial metrics presented by Ren reflect significant operational challenges, including recent monthly deficits. To steer the company back toward stability, leadership intends to transition the platform back into an agile startup framework, streamline active projects, and actively pursue fresh licensing agreements for Korean web novels while exploring new avenues in Japanese and isekai fiction.
