Kakao Entertainment has announced plans to wind down operations for its North American webtoon platform, Tapas. The decision marks a significant retreat from the company's direct platform strategy in the region, arriving roughly half a decade after a massive multi-billion-won investment campaign that saw the acquisition of both Tapas and the webnovel platform Radish.
According to reports originating from South Korean financial media, publishers and rights holders are set to receive formal notices regarding service termination timelines, rights management, and final financial settlements. The company has yet to clarify its protocols regarding user account balances, refunds, and library accessibility following the closure.
The strategic pivot follows a series of contractions in Kakao's overseas footprint. Having previously absorbed Tapas and Radish under the unified Tapas Entertainment banner in 2022, Kakao shuttered Radish to consolidate resources. With the forthcoming closure of Tapas, the corporate giant is effectively abandoning proprietary direct-to-consumer digital comics distribution in North America, signaling a major shift in how Korean webtoon conglomerates approach Western markets.
