Director Kōhei Kadowaki and the independent film label NOTHING NEW have unveiled a brand-new promotional trailer and key visual for the upcoming theatrical anime film We Are Aliens (Ware Ware wa Uchūjin). The freshly released materials place a distinct spotlight on the film’s central heroine, Konatsu, offering another glimpse into the distinct aesthetic of this ambitious independent production.
The narrative centers on Tsubasa and Gyōtarō, two boys whose elementary school bond was fractured by growing pains, jealousy, and lingering misunderstandings. Years later, adult responsibilities have pulled them onto divergent paths. However, unresolved echoes from their youth force both men to confront the emotional wreckage left behind. The adult versions of the protagonists are voiced by Ryōta Bandō as Tsubasa and Amane Okayama as Gyōtarō, while child actors Yūto Maki and Tasuku Nakagome portray the characters during their formative years following open auditions.
Production Pedigree and International Festival Run
Kadowaki—recognized for directing the second season ending sequence of BEASTARS and multiple music videos for YOASOBI—handles an extraordinary breadth of duties on the project, serving as planner, scriptwriter, director, storyboard artist, and editor. Acclaimed music producer Yaffle provides the score, while French animation powerhouse Miyu Productions collaborates on production following their integration into the project. Musical artist adieu contributes the theme song "Sasakure" (Split).
Following a rigorous international festival circuit that included screenings at the Cannes Film Festival's Directors' Fortnight, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and selections at Ottawa, Melbourne, and the Busan International Film Festival, We Are Aliens is scheduled to open theatrically in Japan on September 25. International sales are managed by CHARADES, securing releases across several Asian territories.
