North American anime distributor GKIDS has officially announced theatrical screening plans for the live-action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's poignant 140-page one-shot manga, Look Back. Following a special qualifying run on December 30, the film will roll out to a wider theatrical audience across the United States and Canada starting January 15.
Creative Vision and Global Acclaim
Directed, edited, and scripted by acclaimed filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, the cinematic adaptation charts the complex artistic journey of two young manga creators, Fujino and Kyōmoto. The production features performances from Natsuki Deguchi as the expressive Fujino and Aju Makita as the introverted Kyōmoto. The moving narrative captured international attention following festival showcases at Cannes and the Venice International Film Festival, where it received the UNIMED student jury award.
Production Pedigree
Beyond Kore-eda's direction, the film incorporates musical arrangements by Yūta Bandō, alongside notable creative contributions from musician Kenshi Yonezu performing under the moniker Shark Kick Guitar, vocalist Tōko Miura, and animator Yōko Kuno, who oversaw a specialized rotoscoped sequence produced by Shinei Animation.
