Following its successful theatrical run and international festival appearances, distributor GKIDS has officially scheduled the physical home video release for 100 Meters (Hyakuemu). The acclaimed anime film, directed by Kenji Iwaisawa and based on the manga by Uoto, is set to arrive on Blu-ray Disc on December 1, complete with a specialized Collector's Edition loaded with physical and digital bonuses for enthusiasts and animation collectors.
The Collector's Edition package curated by GKIDS features five exclusive art cards alongside a mini-poster. On the disc side, purchasers will find a comprehensive interview with director Kenji Iwaisawa, a detailed rotoscoping workshop, and exhaustive scene breakdowns that offer a rare look behind the production process at Rock 'n' Roll Mountain. Pre-orders are currently live exclusively through the official GKIDS online storefront.
The narrative centers on the intense psychological and athletic rivalry between Togashi, voiced by Tori Matsuzaka as a naturally gifted runner, and Komiya, voiced by Shōta Sometani, a dedicated competitor whose obsession with the 100-meter sprint begins upon meeting Togashi in their youth. The adaptation showcases the signature stylistic approach of Kenji Iwaisawa, whose previous work on ON-GAKU: Our Sound established his unique mastery of rotoscoped animation and pacing.
The film script was penned by Yasuyuki Mutō, with character designs and chief animation direction handled by Keisuke Kojima, and an evocative musical score composed by Hiroaki Tsutsumi. The theme song "Rashisa" was performed by Official HiGE DANdism. Following its world premiere at Annecy in 2025 and subsequent theatrical screenings across North America, the feature also secured a runner-up award for Best Animated Film from the Florida Film Critics Circle.
Origins and Narrative Foundation
Before achieving cinematic acclaim, original creator Uoto—renowned also for Orb: On the Movements of the Earth—launched the Hyakuemu manga in Kodansha's Magazine Pocket app in November 2018 as a debut serialization. Kodansha compiled the series into five collected volumes, setting the foundation for the striking athletic drama that has now transitioned to the screen.
Togashi is born to run. As a kid, he is naturally gifted and wins every 100-meter race without effort. But in sixth grade, he meets Komiya, a transfer student who is full of determination but lacks technique. In teaching him, Togashi gives Komiya a new purpose: to win no matter what. Years pass by, Togashi and Komiya meet again as rivals on the track and reveal their true selves.
